STEVE MATTHEWS
"The Spectral Army of Souther Fell" The Spectral Army of Souther Fell is Cumbria's most famous and best authenticated ghost story. In 1745, and on several occasions prior to that, up to 30 people living beneath Souther Fell reported seeing an army marching five abreast along the ridge of the mountain for periods of 2 hours or more. This talk will look closely at the contemporary evidence and the way the story was taken seriously by scientists, poets, novelists and guide-books during the following century. Steve Matthews, of Bookcase in Carlisle, is a bookseller and publisher. His previous books are Sara Losh and Wreay Church and King Arthur Lives in Merrie Carlisle.
