CUMBRIAN POETS

Cumbrian Poets have been nurturing poets from all over the county for nearly thirty years. At a monthly workshop each person brings a poem to be read to the group. The writer keeps silent while the merits and faults of the poem are debated. It is like taking your clothes off in public - exposed. But it's a great way to improve your writing and learn from experienced, published poets.

Christopher Pilling published four books last year - Defying Fate, a close translation of the Belgian poet Marice Carême; Springing from Catallus, a loose translation of the liveliest Latin poet, a selection from which had won the John Dryden Translation Prize; Coming Ready or Not, a new and selected collection of his own poems and A Splendid Specimen, a play in verse about Torquemada, the Chief Inquisitor, which won the first Kate Collingwood Award.
