BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY

second LITERARY FESTIVAL

JULY 9th - 11th 2010

Bowness-on-Solway, nestling on the inner Solway estuary, has a reputation for inspiring and motivating creativity across the arts.  Writers, artists, and musicians seem to be drawn to the history, seascape, wildlife and scenery which fuse together to form the special character of this ever changing area of natural beauty

In 2007 a way of acknowledging the diverse creativity of the area took root from the germ of an idea and began to grow organically into the reality of the first
Bowness-on-Solway Literary Festival - Writ on the Wall 2008

Enthusiasm for the idea grew rapidly, attracting the agreement and support of like minded people and groups from across the region eager to become involved.  The weekend of June 27 – 29 was settled on for the festival – the aim to celebrate and promote appreciation across a range of literary disciplines, including poetry, history, performance, biography etc

The weekend kicked off to a lively start on the Friday evening with a ceilidh featuring Thrice Brewed.  The literary action began on Saturday morning when book token prizes were presented to the winners of the Festival's Children's Poetry Competition and the talented youngsters read their poems to a delighted audience.

There then followed a wealth of talks and workshops during the day and musical events in the evening.

With barely time to sleep, Sunday at the Festival kicked off with more talks and workshops culminating in the afternoon with sessions from two of Cumbria's established young writers with international reputations: poet Jacob Polley and award winning best selling novelist Sarah Hall.

Following the huge success of Writ on the Wall 2008 plans are now well underway for next year's Writ on the Wall 2010.
